Head of Dionysos or Hermes,
Roman,
Reign of Hadrian 117-138 A.D.
Rosso Antico,
Height 16,7 cm.
Copy of a Greek original of 460/450 BC. According to C. Gasparri, it would be a herm of Dionysos, the work of an unknown master (LIMC III, 1986, 443 Nr 184 (type of the Galleria delle Carte geografiche). Other archaeologists see it as a representation of Hermes and perhaps even a copy of the famous Hermes Propylaios Alkamenes of the Acropolis. See in this regard LIMC V , 1990, 297-298, 374-376 s.v. Offerer,
Sardinia,
Nuragic culture, 9th-7th century B.C.
Bronze,
Height: 8,5 cm.
Ex private collection USA.
The bronzes from Sardinia, known as Nuragic bronzes from the 9th c B.C. to the 6th c B.C., are well known for their elaborate soldiers. Another distinct group, but much rarer, are the offerers. They always have their right hand raised in a salute to the divinity, and carry offerings in their left hand.
Our votive female offerer has in her left hand an offering plate. She wears a long thin hooded dress, a cape and a stola with engraved decorations, on her head a conical hat. Photo: Archea Ancient Art, Amsterdam

This bowl is clearly war booty. The new “owner” has picked pieces of silver from it to “pay” with. He kept the heavy foot obviously for last, but apparently didn’t live to use it.
Inscription on the back.

The nude adolescent messenger of love running, his left foot on the ground and his right extended behind him.

gathered into a top-knot. In his right hand he probably once held a lamp.
