Lion head as a fragment of a rhyton.
Achaemenid

5th century B.C.

Achaemenid rhyta in glass are extremely rare.
Beside this fragment, only two other objects survive: a complete rhyton terminating in a lion’s head kept in the Miho Museum (SALDERN, A. von, Fluted Cup Terminating in a Lion’s Head in Miho Museum, Ancient Glass, Miho Museum, 2001, pp. 213-5, no.59) and a fragmentary rhyton found at Persepolis depicting a bull attacked by a lion (SALDERN, A. von, Antikes Glas. Handbuch der Archäologie, Munich, 2004, p. 108, 16.96).
